When this starts happening to you, you will be able to fix most copiers out there. The only thing that you will really need is the service manual and the operations guide. With those two you will get a feel for anything the model you are working on can do. As far as networking is concerned, most copiers network the same way... Nothing is very complicated any more...
If at a loss for manuals, there are many sites online that sell cd manual compilations... this can come in very handy for diligent technician

( 3 / 30 )As I said before, wia is very similar to usb twain scanning.... its very straight forward...
install the wia driver
go to control panel then to scanners and cameras and create a profile
connect your usb scanner and you are ready to go
well there are certain caveats...
if you have vista... your mileage will vary... it will either work or it just won't
xp is pretty stable...
one thing to note... if you start installing and uninstalling it a bunch of times you will confuse the pc...
to get rid of these other instances... you have to go into the device manager and delete all of them...
I couldn't figure out which was the working instance and neither will you...
but if you have xp... you really shouldn't go through all of that...

This will be the new usb standard. The old scan to usb used twain. This one uses wia. I haven't done too much of it so I cann't really comment except to say it runs just like usb when you get it working right.
Scan to USB
This scanning requires no network so your issues will either be virtual usb drivers, cable, pc needs rebooting or reinstalling of twain drivers
Scan to PC via scanner file utility
this kind of scanning a basic home network setup so your issues will be your computer permissions, computer exceptions and copier scanner.
Scan to PC via SMB
This kind of scanning requires a basic home network setup. you are logging into the pc with no utilities. Your issues will be permissions and your network (rarely network)
Scan to FTP
With scan to PC via scanner utility and SMB you can get away with host name but with FTP just use the IP address of the computer your ftp server is on and make it static. It will save you headache. This method works but is rarely used. Your soft spot is your permissions on the pc where the folder is located, your network and the copier
Scan to email.
Simplest to setup. This requires email address, login and password as well as smtp server. Problem areas are email provider. Sometimes email accounts don't play nice with email scanners. On occasion, they will bounce emails from scanner thinking its spam or some other unauthorized entry. Sometimes your network will block the ip address of the scanner or even the port due to router server issues. The simplest to setup but when it goes bad it goes bad...
To test all scanning
setup a work environment on your laptop.
verify the scan setup on your laptop is working ok.
create a simple network with your laptop and scanner via a crossover cable or two ethernet cables and a switch
test it.
in general, this will work.
the problem will usually be your pc or the network. In the case of scan to email, it could even be your email service provider.

( 2.8 / 34 )This morning I was convinced that the km 1820 was not a usb scanner. This evening I know better.
If you do not follow these instructions a copier may suffer serious harm....
How to install a usb scanner for km 1820 or any other scanner product.
Don't plug in the usb cable... and I repeat do not plug in the usb cable. This is me with my boot in your face do not plug in the usb cable. Next unplug any other usb or other silly peripherals except for the mouse and keyboard and monitor. Next delete every virtual usb port from the system that they you are allowed to. Next with your pc now isolated from the network and no usb cable connected install the usb scanner. Install your scanner software. Open up your twain driver and name it. Start your scanner software and you should see your twain driver in the scanner drop down list. (paperport) Go scan something... It should work... if it doesn't restart your pc. if it still doesn't work... delete all printer drivers and virtual usb ports and the twain driver and restart then do a fresh install... it should work then...
then breath a collective sigh with me.... DDDAAAANNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!

( 3 / 85 )Many times when you are setting up scanning in vista your programs will get blocked. Sometimes you will be able to work around it but there are times when your setup will have to last just as it is. Now, here is the deal. As you know vista blocks a program and you have to enable it every time from the tray. This kind of defeats the purpose of upgrading to a copier. Automation is the key and this atribute makes your copier look like garbage.
I searched and searched and here is the fix...
Start----Run----and type in msconfig.exe
Go to STARTUP Tab and remove the app that is blocked by Vista noting on a sheet of paper where the program is run from. If the program app is run from the startup menu, then just go to Start---All Program Files---Startup Folder and remove the app there.
After removing the app, create an app Task using the Task Schedule with full VISTA blessed permission by following the instructions below:
1. Launch the Task Scheduler
Example: Start Menu → All Programs → Accessories → System Tools
2. From the Actions panel on the right, select Create Task...
a. Give the app a name of your choice in the "Name Section"
3. Go to the Security Options on the General tab
a. Select an user account with administrative privileges
b. Select the radio button Run only when user is logged on
c. Check the box Run with highest privileges
4.Go to the Triggers tab and click New...
a. In Begin the task, select At log on
b. In the Settings options, select All users
c. In the Advanced Settings options, check the box Enabled
d. Click OK to close the dialog
5. Go to the Actions tab and click New...
a. For Action, select Start a program
b. In the Settings options, browse for the Program/Script you want to execute on
startup
c. Click OK to close the dialog
6. Go to the Settings tab
a. Check the box Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed
b. Uncheck the box Stop the task if it runs longer than
7. Make any other desired settings
8. Click OK to save and close the task properties
